Sunday, June 19: Departure date from the U.S. to Glasgow, Scotland

Monday, June 20:Arrive in Scotland!

A private chartered motor coach will meet our group at the airport in Glasgow. Our first day in Scotland takes us to Ayrshire in the southwest known for its rolling green hills, a varied coastline along the Firth of Clyde and picturesque fishing villages.

Accommodations in Ayrshire is Glenapp Castle, a fairytale Scottish Baronial castle nestled in 36 acres of glorious gardens and woodlands near the beautiful Ayrshire coast. Here we will have spectacular views across the Irish Sea to the island of Arran and the granite rock of Ailsa Craig.

Three nights at Glenapp Castle includes Dinner each night at the Castle, full Scottish Breakfast and porterage

Tuesday, June 21:Pilgrimage to Scotland’s National Bard: Robert Burns!

Day Excursion to the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum with a local guide to discover the poetry and life of Robert Burns with a tour of his birthplace museum and visits to the Burns Monument in Kilmarnock and Alloway’s Auld Kirk. Lunch included on this day will round out our activities!

Wednesday, June 22: Exploring more of Ayrshire

Activities for everyone include visiting dramatic Culzean Castle & Country Park known for its clifftop setting and gorgeous gardens!

Thursday, June 23 & Friday, June 24: Art Nouveau Glasgow

On the way to Glasgow, brief stops could happen in Troon and other coastal cities with literary ties to the popular book series Outlander as well as more Robert Burns connections!

While in Glasgow, we will have one or more Exclusive Author Events with more details to follow! Glasgow is currently home to many modern-day authors as well as outstanding Art Nouveau architecture and culture.  Activities for everyone in Glasgow include a Guided Walking Tour of the historic city center and the Glasgow Cathedral in the company of a local guide.

Accommodations while in Glasgow will be at a lovely 5-star property in the heart of the city.  Two nights at a 5-star Glasgow hotel will include full Scottish Breakfast and porterage

Saturday, June 25:Train Journey in the Highlands!

On this day, we will travel through Scottish vistas on the Jacobite Steam Train, known as one of the greatest railway journeys of the world! It is also known as the famed Hogwarts Express from the Harry Potter novels! Our train ride begins in Fort William and includes stops in the scenic village of Glenfinnan and Arisaig to Mallaig and back to Fort William. Afterwards, we continue on into the Highlands to our next hotel destination.

Accommodations while in the Highlands at the Achnagairn Castle and Estate, within 30 acres of splendid countryside located near Inverness. Three nights at Achnagairn Castle include Dinner each night, full Scottish Breakfast and porterage

Sunday, June 26 & Monday, June 27:

Exploring the Highlands Heritage & Cruise on Loch Ness!

Activities for everyone include a one-hour cruise of the most well known loch of all, Loch Ness! Our cruise from Jacobite Cruises sails you above the deepest depths of the loch and affords superb views of the ruins of Urquhart Castle and perhaps a visit to the lovely village of Beauly.

Another day will include history and spirits by visiting Culloden Battlefield and its Visitor Center. History buffs will find this experience amazing to see the actual battlefield which has been restored to a condition close as possible to what the Jacobites would have experienced on that fateful day in1746.

Ready for a wee dram? We cannot visit this part of the Highlands and not stop at a whisky distillery! Just south of the region of Moray is the famed Malt Whisky Trail. We will take a tour and tasting at the attractive Glenfiddich Distillery located north of Dufftown in the area of Speyside where the manufacture of the golden liquid has happened since 1887. Glenfiddich has a number of claims to fame though perhaps most importantly it was the introduction in 1963 of a single malt whisky to the world. The tour will delve into the distillery’s tradition and take us through the production facilities and then time for tasting Glenfiddich’s 12-year, 15-year and 18-year versions.

Tuesday, June 28: Driving through the Grampian Mountains to Scotland’s historic capital city, Edinburgh!

Our private motor coach will take us on a beautiful southerly route through the GrampianMountains. We will stop to tour and have lunch at the illustrious Balmoral Castle, the Queen’s official residence in the Highlands which dates back to the days of Queen Victoria. Here we will tour the castle’s rooms and have Lunch at the castle’s restaurant.

Later in the afternoon we enter Scotland’s vibrant historic capital city, Edinburgh!

Accommodations in Edinburgh at the 5-star Balmoral Hotel which boasts a superb location with stunning views of Edinburgh Castle. Four nights at the Balmoral Hotel include full Scottish Breakfast and porterage

Tonight: Enjoy strolling in Edinburgh’s Old Town or finding a pub with live music! Dinner on your own

Exploring the World’s First UNESCO City of Literature: Edinburgh!

During our stay in Edinburgh everyone will be treated to the following activities:

  • Guided Walking and Private Bus Tour of Edinburgh’s most recognizable literary landmarks associated with the city’s famous authors of the past: Robert Louis Stevenson, Muriel Spark, JK Rowling and Sir Walter Scott among others
  • Exclusive Author Events in Edinburgh, which could include a Private Literary Pub Tour & Dinner! More details on the events involving modern day authors to follow!
  • Day Excursion to Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott which will include guided tour and Lunch. This day could also include a visit to the legendary ruins of Melrose Abbey

Evening of July 1: Farewell Dinner at our Balmoral Hotel set in a beautiful private room with a drinks reception and entertainment from a bagpiper dressed in all his Scottish regalia who will lead us into a fabulous dinner!

Saturday, July 2: Depart from Edinburgh’s Airport; arrive back in Kansas City by evening

Literary Tour of Scotland inclusions for everyone from Lisa Ball Travel Design (LBTD):

  • Round-trip airfare to/from Kansas City to Glasgow, Scotland and from Edinburgh, Scotland. Please note: with advance notice, the tour director can arrange flights from other cities to the U.S. gateway city and/or a return to another U.S. city (note: additional charges may apply)
  • Comfortable and competent ground transportation aboard private chartered motor-coaches
  • Hand-selected hotels in Ayrshire: Glenapp Castle Hotel (3 nights); in Glasgow at a city central 5-star hotel (2 nights); in the Highlands at Achnagairn Castle & Estate (3 nights); and in Edinburgh at the 5-star Balmoral Hotel (4 nights)
  • All Taxes and Gratuities applicable to airfare, hotels, ground transportation and group meals; all gratuities for hired guides and coach drivers; and all daily City Taxes collected by the hotels/lodgings
  • Porterage will be included at the hotels offering porterage service
  • Sight-seeing venues and excursions included in the base tour (based on availability) as outlined in the tour itinerary

  • Whisper System: Throughout the tour, each traveler will have the use of an audio headset device which will allow you to hear any of our tour guides anywhere!

Base Tour Projected Cost: $6,800 to $7,500 per person based on double occupancy; the single supplement is $1,200 in addition

Deposits and Payments: A deposit of $500 per person will secure your spot on this tour due immediately at sign-up

Monthly Payment Plan: Convenient monthly payments will begin January 15, 2016 through April 15, 2016. Your deposit goes toward your base tour costs. Please follow this schedule:

January 15: $2,000 per person

February 15: $2,000 per person

March 15: $1,000 per person

April 15: $1,000 per person

May 1, 2016: Your final payment will include any remaining amount owed to the base tour costs plus any Optional Tours you elect to purchase

You may also pay in larger sums if you wish, making fewer payments. However, if you participate in the monthly payment plan, please make your payments on or before the due date.

Final Tour Cost: This amount will be set once we know all group costs and details on our Exclusive Author Events. The tour director will communicate this cost to you as soon as it is possible to do so.

Travel Insurance:Please note: Tour costs do not include travel insurance as this cost is based on the traveler’s age. If you have a pre-existing health condition and you wish to obtain travel insurance, you must do so within two weeks of paying your deposit to LBTD. LBTD’s airfare expert, Deborah Mason is authorized to sell Travel Guard; her phone number is 816-453-7062. This is one source of reputable travel insurance. AAA Travel also sells travel insurance through Allianz.

Cancellation Policy: If you must cancel your participation with this tour please note March 1, 2016 is the tour cut-off date. Canceling before March 1, 2016, LBTD will cheerfully refund your deposit and any monies you have paid prior to this date. Canceling on March 1, 2016 or after, your deposit will automatically be retained. LBTD will try, as a courtesy to travelers, to reimburse other tour costs though this amount will depend on the cancelation date. There is no guarantee of a reimbursement. If you cancel the tour and you have purchased travel insurance, LBTD will work with your insurance company to provide the necessary paperwork so you can receive a reimbursement from the insurance company. Please note: there are some tour costs which affect the cost of others going on the trip and these costs are not refundable. This includes the ground transportation costs, hiring of guides, group meals, and sight-seeing venues where fixed, timed tickets have been purchased. Due to their specialty nature, there can be no refunds on Optional Tours.

Tour Documents: All participants in this tour must fill out a Passport Information document; complete the Personal ID form giving LBTD known information on your basic health condition, any known allergies, food/diet restrictions and your emergency contacts; and sign and date the Tour Waiver form. These documents are due to LBTD by March 1, 2016.

Needed Documents: A valid U.S. Passport – please check your passport’s expiration date. Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the United Kingdom (Scotland).

Movie Night & Tour Meeting: We will have a fun gathering offering travel savvy tips and watch a movie and/or a travel video set in Scotland. This gathering is optional though it provides a great way to meet your fellow travelers!
